Eggesford Hunt, Bridge Reeve, 17.03.22

.

Last Thursday a few of us sabbed the Eggesford’s end of season meet. Some of us had to work in the morning, so we arrived late and found the hunt in fields around Bridge Reeve, very near to where they tried to dig out a fox from a badger sett a few years ago (the incident for which their terriermen were convicted last year).

From there they went towards Gosse’s Farm, where hounds drew blank, and then towards Cleave Copse. Hounds briefly found a line but the warm dry weather soon put a stop to that. After a couple of loops of the area, they headed south, trespassing on Forestry England land east of Labdon. Hounds pursued a fox as far as Kennydown Farm and then crossed the road towards Wembworthy Closes.

It took a while for us to reposition our foot sabs but we spotted hounds again in the valley between Lower Narracott and Lake. Hounds were spread out, with some heading west on a line, a few hounds heading south on their own and others terrorising sheep in the vicinity of Eagle Down. A fox was seen running and we covered their scent. After picking up the hounds once more, Jason headed out via Redland and then hacked all the way back to the kennels, packing up at around 5.30pm.

Many of our hunts have now finished for the season, but we’re still out.
