Devon County Hunt Saboteurs take non-violent direct action to protect wildlife in Devon. We are affiliated to the Hunt Saboteurs Association.
Although hunting a mammal with a pack of hounds has been illegal since 2005, it still goes on all over our countryside, as the ban is not enforced. In Devon alone there are 19 fox hunts, four beagle packs (hunting hares), one mink hunt and two stag hunts. The fox hunts operate several times a week during the hunting season, which runs from mid-July until April (including ‘cubbing’).
Hunt saboteurs (‘sabs’) intervene directly to prevent hunts from making a kill, through the use of hunting horns, voice calls, citronella sprays that mask the scent of the hunted animal, and cameras to act as a deterrent. To learn more about our tactics please see the HSA tactics page. We are active and sabbing every Saturday during the season, and often during the week too.
We also take direct action against the badger cull. Our members have defended badgers in cull zones in Somerset and Devon every year since the culls began in 2013.
