Stevenstone Hunt, Buckland Brewer, 10.02.24

On Saturday we weren’t invited to the Stevenstone Hunt’s meet at Great Gorwood Farm in Buckland Brewer, but of course we invited ourselves!

They started hunting in the valley between the meet and the neighbouring Cleave Farm. Sabs stayed with hounds and disrupted the huntswoman’s attempts to draw. Tempers were already flaring. Jessica Half-pack Harrison threw her pyramid schemes out of the pram and threatened to call the police. Whipper-in Sean Watts has now traded the horse he likely shot for a quadbike with a landowner attached to it. The landowner assaulted one of our sabs and tried to grab his camera, but was quickly put in his place. Failing to hunt foxes here huntswoman took the hounds east.

The hunt went through Buckland Wood and east into East Hele Wood, near Frithelstockstone. Runners kept up with them and our other foot teams were positioned to intercept. Hounds went into cry in this area but between our teams we managed to stop them. They hunted this valley south to Craneham wood, hunting through a pheasant pen and into Tythecott.

At one point during the day the hounds picked up on a scent and went into cry. A pair of beautiful foxes bolted straight towards sabs, one after the other. Sabs dropped down and waited for them to pass before quickly masking the scent. Hounds in full cry were rated by our foot teams, holding them off briefly. But the hounds were determined. They proceeded to pick up on the scent and went into full cry once again, rampaging through a residential garden. The landowner was very angry that the hounds were in her garden, explaining to us that her friend’s cat had been killed by a hunt before. She confronted Sean Watts who tried to blame sabs as usual. Eventually they lost the scent and huntswoman slowly gathered the hounds.

Huntswoman tried casting hounds into her favourite hunting ground, Thorne Wood, but our foot teams were positioned throughout the area. Half-pack withdrew the hounds and moved quickly north. Our vehicle followed the hunt as our teams made their way out of the woods. The hunt carried on into the wooded area south of West Hele Wood, where our vehicle lost sight of them. One team made their way in following the tracks, and what they found was shocking. A recently mauled, dead roe deer, lying in the river, still warm to the touch. See our previous post for pictures and more information. After we checked the area, our vehicle found the hunt already back at the meet packing up. It seems they killed this beautiful deer and scarpered, like the cowards they are.
