This Saturday we sabbed the Eggesford hunt at their glamorous meet at a lay-by on Morchard Road. The Eggesford hunt are especially hated in this area and we encountered several angry locals during the day who are just as sick of the hunt as we are.
After chucking their rubbish into the hedges, the hunt set off to Weeke farm and spent the morning around Pepper Lake, drawing a number of blanks and sending hounds right into Easton Barton, terrifying the cows penned in the barns. They eventually got on to a fox just north of Easton Barton and chased it to ground near Rudge. With terrier men circling and eager to dig out we had some local help guarding the fox for the rest of the day.
The hunt then headed back the way they had come and south east towards Spirelake Cross. They spent the rest of the day between here, Oldborough and Slade at one point chasing a fox across the road at Venn and onto land they are banned from. After a few more blanks, and sending the hounds into yet another dairy farm to harass some trapped cows at Knathorne farm, they hounds got on one more fox, right in front of sabs and all the field riders, including a number of young children. Thankfully sabs were there to intervene, but it is a truly sick person who brings their child out to watch a fox get ripped to shreds.
The hunt finished soon after, back in the lay by, an uncharacteristically early end for Jason who knows he’s not welcome in this area and probably didn’t want to keep pushing his luck with the angry locals.
