Eggesford Hunt, Serstone near Bow, 30.10.23

No kills for smug little huntsman Jason Marles as we ruined his cubbing meet at Serstone farm, just north of Bow, on Monday. Eggesford killed a young vixen in this area last New Years, and we were determined to not let that happen again.

The hunt were just about to set off as we arrived. Jason took the hounds and his field of just 2 riders into the valley to the south, where he first cast hounds out. A few hounds were picking up on scent in the scrub and beginning to speak, and a fox was seen by runners bolting from the dense bramble patch. Sabs intervened by masking the area with citronella and rating hounds, distracting them from picking up on the scent.

As the day went on they attempted to hunt the hedge lines and copses around Zeal Monachorum, all the way north to the Old Mill and North Yeo farm, and across to the Devonshire Heartland Way. Several foxes were seen by us throughout the day and we did our best to deter hounds from hunting, ensuring that our foot teams were always well-positioned and using horn and imitating voice calls to command hounds.

South Devon Hunt, Dartmoor, 23.09.23

We were up before the crack of dawn for a cracking sab of the South Devon Hunt, a hunt that by all accounts are cracking under the pressure of all the infighting amongst their ranks… Okay, you get the picture!

The hunt met at Bel Tor at 7am and spent four hours drawing the steep-sided and densely gorse-covered slopes of Sharp Tor, Yartor Down, Yar Tor and Corndon. Our trio of runners stuck to huntsman and hounds like glue – no mean feat across this kind of terrain! – while another foot team strategically intercepted hounds at various points when they were in cry on a line. Runners lifted hounds’ heads with horn and voice calls whenever they were cast out and rated them back to huntsman Joe Emmett if they picked up on scent. Compared to some of the hunts we sab, this pack were quite responsive to our calls.

One fox was marked to ground between a pile of rocks on a steep slope. Fortunately, runners were able to move hounds on before any hunt members arrived and that fox was therefore left alone. See below video:

Spooners & West Dartmoor Hunt, Dartmoor, 16.09.23

Yesterday we teamed up with Plymouth & West Devon Hunt Sabs to pay a visit to the Spooners & West Dartmoor Hunt at their early morning cubbing meet on the western edge of Dartmoor. A couple of weeks ago, members of this hunt violently attacked a couple of the Plymouth & West Devon sabs, stealing equipment, cutting the body cam off one sab with a knife, and injuring a sab’s hand. If the hunt wanted to put sabs off for the coming season, they’ll have to learn the hard way that they’ve only done the opposite.

Huntsman, hounds, terriermen, and around a handful of riders met at Smeardon Down near Peter Tavy. They began hunting between Lower Godsworthy and Higher Godsworthy and then accessed the moor, spending most of the morning hunting valleys between Cox Tor and Great Staple Tor, between White Tor and Great Mis Tor and around Petertavy Great Common and Cocks Hill. Foot sab teams went onto the moor from various directions.

Torrington Farmer’s Hunt, 09.09.23

We received a tip off that the Torrington creeps had started hunting their local fox cubs, so we went to the kennels at dusk to investigate.

Sabs followed the hunt on foot from the kennels to a nearby field. With eyes on from all angles, the huntsman let the hounds fertilise the crops for a minute before heading back to the kennels. A poor example of what they would claim was “hound exercise”.

We expect that with the cool ground and the strong smell of fox scent in this area, they would’ve spent the morning hunting if it weren’t for sabs.

BLATANT CUBBING AND BIASED POLICING AT EGGESFORD HUNT MEET

It’s a long one…

On Saturday we witnessed the most blatant form of cubhunting and the most biased and incompetent form of policing of the season so far at Eggesford’s meet at aptly-named Crook(e) Burnell on the edge of North Tawton, owned by Duncan Tucker. We attended alongside Plymouth & West Devon Hunt Sabs and did our best to prevent the killing of fox cubs. We saw several terrified young foxes running for their lives and were able to ensure that some did get away.

Unfortunately we know at least one fox was killed in a dense bit of scrub south of the farm, and there are several other suspected kills. Devon & Cornwall Police’s finest from Okehampton Police Station have blood on their hands, as they flatly refused to intervene in the illegal hunting happening right in front of them, instead making up laws and threatening to arrest sabs for made-up offences.

The first 4 minutes of our video show what cubhunting looks like:

Anyone with even 5 minutes of training would know what they’re looking at when a small, dense patch of brambly scrub is surrounded on all sides by hunt members (‘holding up’ – to prevent animals from escaping), the hounds are sent in, they speak briefly and then the huntsman wades into the dense scrub and picks up bits of torn apart dead animal. Minutes later, hunt support indicate another fox has broken from the same area. Over the next few minutes several of them point out the exact direction the fox has run in, to which huntsman Jason Marles puts the hounds on that exact line and hounds immediately go into cry.

Eggesford Hunt, Iddesleigh, 23.08.23

The hunts think violence deters us. One would have thought they’d have learnt by now that so long as they keep violently persecuting wildlife, we’ll continue heading into the fields to stop them.

So while one of our sabs was recovering from his injuries after the attack at yesterday’s meet of the Devon & Somerset Staghounds, some of us went out to see what the Eggesford were up to at their evening cubbing meet between Iddesleigh and Monkokehampton.

We know the area well, having sabbed here a number of times. Some of the regular blood junkies left the scene the moment we arrived. The look of disappointment on their faces when they spotted our Land Rover driving down the road was quite the picture! Hounds and huntsman were already in the field and hounds were beginning to pick up on scent when sabs caught up with them. They chased a fox south towards Mill Farm and across the road, but this one got away. From there they drew the copse at Mill Farm in both directions, stopping halfway to cause absolute chaos amongst a herd of cows and calves.

Eggesford Hunt, Southcott, Winkleigh, 16.08.23

Jason and his new minion (aka whipper-in) Josh snuck out for an evening cubbing meet today at Southcott near Winkleigh.

Hounds were cast into the woods at Little Vellow Moor but we deployed sabs to send them straight back to their vehicles for an early finish. This seemed to cause Martin Tucker to lose the plot a bit, as he drove his quad at our sabs on the main road. Bloodjunkies snap when they don’t get their fix.

The cubbing setup is the most blatant form of illegal hunting you will witness: hounds are cast into a covert where the hunt know foxes reside (e.g. a small woodland, a maize field or other dense crop) and hunt staff and supporters surround the covert on all sides. You’ll see this in the video we’ll share tomorrow. They do this to prevent foxes from escaping so the pack can be trained to find and kill. It’s grim, it’s illegal and sabs are the only people doing anything to stop it. You can support our work via the link in the comments.

Please also follow our neighbouring sab group Plymouth & West Devon Hunt Sabs who joined us this evening.
