Silverton & South Devon Joint Meet, Creedy Barton, 08.02.24

We’d heard Angie Prouse was hosting a joint meet of the Silverton and South Devon Hunts at Creedy Barton, near Crediton – a two-for-one we weren’t going to miss out on!

Two hunts means twice the number of red coats, riders, supporters and terriermen. The hosts will be keen to show off their ‘country’ and the visitors will want to impress with their hunting ability. Neither aim is aided by sabs attending to intervene in their cruel sport!

With this being an area we know very well from years of sabbing both the hunt and the badger cull, we were confident in our ability to make a difference here. On three occasions over the course of the day, when hounds were in the vicinity of known badger setts, we made a beeline for those setts and predictably found hounds marking foxes to ground there. Our presence averted digouts on each occasion, leaving about a dozen terriermen sat around on their quadbikes all day without a job to do. By mid-afternoon, the smug looks they’d greeted us with in the morning had been wiped off their faces and replaced with obscene gestures and “why don’t you just f*** off”.

We had eyes on the hunt all day. They set off east and then north towards Shobrooke Mill Farm, drawing the hedges uphill in direction of Furze and Efford, from where they carried on at speed towards Yendacott. Here we spent a while with huntsman Joe Emmett on foot as hounds were intermittently speaking. Silverton huntsman Chris Matterface and all the riders meanwhile sat in a neighbouring field. Sabs were on hand to cover the scent of foxes fleeing from the pack and rate the hounds off their line.

Silverton Hunt, Thorverton, 06.03.24

This afternoon we received several tipoffs that the Silverton Hunt had been spotted in the Thorverton area. We can’t always act on last-minute intel but fortunately today we had a team who were able to mobilise at short notice. It’s always worth dropping us a message whenever you see the hunt!

The first signs of the hunt when we arrived in the area were a horse trailer parked on the edge of the village and a lone hound running along a road near Castle Wood. Paw and hoof prints gave away which direction the hunt had gone. Teams searching the area on foot, by road and by drone soon came across a few suspicious characters on quadbikes between Stone and Traymill Farm. The terrier boys immediately got on their walkie-talkies to inform huntsman Chris Matterface that sabs had arrived to spoil their fun. Moments later we heard his horn and voice calls down the road from us and hounds came streaming back up towards him out of the valley.

In what has become a bit of a theme with hunts we’ve sabbed in recent weeks, sabs showing up was all it took for them to pack up. Huntsman, hounds, terrier men and about a dozen riders then very slowly made their way back to Raddon Court to box up nice and early. En route we came across some locals who expressed their disgust at the hunt but also some imbecilic hunt supporters who thought it would be a great idea to deliberately block the road with a pony.

Silverton Hunt, Bickleigh, 23.11.22

A hilly and wet day with the Silverton today.

They met at Perry Lodge, north of the Fursdon Estate near Bickleigh, and spent quite a while at the meet before setting off. In part this was to allow the makeshift “trail-layer” to film himself laying his smokescreen across a field out the back of the meet. When hounds came through that exact field a few minutes later, they completely ignored the “trail”. When we enquired what the scent was made of we were told it was a trade secret. Clearly whatever had been put on the end of the rag (if anything at all) was not something the hounds were used to paying any attention to!

Nobody’s fooled by the trail-laying facade, including the hunt follower whose response to our allegations of illegal hunting was “well foxes have to be controlled somehow”.

Silverton Hunt. Eggesford Hunt. 09.11.22

Two hunts in one day!

Today we took a full landy of sabs to the Silverton meet, in a field at Three Foot Stool Cross between Tedburn St Mary and Dunsford. After standing around in the sun for over an hour, huntsman Chris Matterface set off to the west with hounds and field riders in tow. The next hour was spent doing a loop to the south-west of the meet and hounds weren’t cast out once, so the Silverton ended up doing zero hunting today. Result!

We left our landy and a small foot team to follow the Silverton on their jolly hack, while the rest of us headed off north to find the Eggesford, who were hunting in the vicinity of Black Dog. We came across them in the valley south of Wood Farm. Hounds ran off to the north in full cry and chased a fox to ground in a badger sett well-known to us. This was the sett ex-terrier boy Nathan Bowes was caught at a few years ago, digging-out a fox that had been hunted to ground. He received a caution for that incident. True to form, Jason blew the horn call for “gone to ground”, so we quickly deployed sabs to head to the sett and prevent a digout.

Silverton Hunt, Home Farm, Perridge Estate, Longdown, 23.02.22

Yesterday we went to see what the Silverton Hunt were up to at their meet at Home Farm on the Perridge Estate near Longdown. We found the hunt in fields at Higher Cotley. When we arrived, the riders left huntsman and hounds and went on a fun ride towards South Wood.

After a short while, everyone headed back to the meet and the hounds were boxed up. Probably our shortest sab of the season and the least amount of effort required to pack them up.

If you like what we do, please support our fuel and equipment fund (link in the comments). With just a few more weeks remaining of the hunting season please continue to send us tip-offs about your local hunts and let us know if you see them out and about.

Silverton Hunt, Creedy Barton, Newton St Cyres, 20.11.21

Silverton Hunt met at Creedy Barton near Newton St Cyres on Saturday, owned by Hunt Master and mortgage adviser Angie Prouse, who once again treated us to her best banshee impression.

The hunt left the meet in direction of Wyke Cross, drawing a couple of kale fields between the roads and the railway line on the way. They then spent an hour mostly riding around fields between Higher Rewe and Furze, doing very little active hunting.

The whole thing was very lacklustre and hunt support who had come along for the day looked decidedly bored, resorting to abusive language, childish hand-signals and kicking mud at sabs to vent their frustration. Most of this lot are grown adults but you wouldn’t know if all you had to go on was their behaviour around sabs!

SILVERTON TERRIERMEN ATTACK SABS, STEAL POSSESSIONS AND SMASH LANDROVER WINDOW

Yesterday the Silverton Hunt met at the Upton Pyne Equestrian Centre and spent the morning hunting the Upton Pyne shooting estate on the edge of Exeter. Sabs witnessed some very blatant illegal hunting from huntsman Chris Matterface, but the fox got away thanks to sabs. By 1.30pm the hunt had had enough. They left the shooting estate and headed north towards Raddon Hills with sabs in tow.

Our Land Rover crew were parked on the road near Starved Oak Cross, waiting to see what the hunt’s next move would be, when terriermen attacked the vehicle and one of them (Matt Welham) broke the passenger side window of our Land Rover with such force he ended up with cuts all over his hands.

Silverton Hunt, Stockleigh Pomeroy, 15.02.2020

Last Saturday we went to see what the Silverton were up to. We found them at their meet in the village of Stockleigh Pomeroy, but apparently the sight of sabs was so upsetting that they immediately packed up. As the terrier men took one of our vehicles on a tour of the countryside, our other vehicle followed as huntsman Chris Matterface took the hound van straight back to the kennels.

With that done we then moved on to search for the the South Tetcott who were meeting at Northlew. We found them hunting in 40+ mph gusts of wind and hail, with their red faced wind-burnt support out despite the weather hoping for a glimpse of carnage. Hounds were immediately found in cry in the valley south of Patchacott and a team of sabs ran in to rate hounds back.

Clearly very unhappy to see us, hunt master David Bowden rode his horse at sabs and whipped one of them around the head! This same individual thought himself very big pulling sabs’ hats off last time we were with this hunt. When denied their blood lust these cruel killers will take it out on the next nearest target.

Silverton Hunt at Hayne House, 13.1.2018

Back to the Silverton with our friends from Somerset Hunt Saboteur Group. The extra attention we’ve been giving this hunt is starting to pay off. The hunt met at Hayne House, just outside Silverton. On the way to the meet the huntsman enlisted several elderly hunt supporters in Silverton to block our vehicle by standing in the middle of the road. This week we were surprised to find several police vehicles in attendance even before the hunt set off. It transpired that they’d asked the hunt in advance where they would be meeting and that the huge volume of complaints they’d had from all of you since New Year’s Day haven’t fallen on completely deaf ears. Thank you!

Silverton Hunt at Upton Hellions, 6.1.2018

Once more to the Silverton Hunt, who killed a fox (something they’ve now admitted), assaulted sabs and broke one of our cameras earlier this week. We were joined by friends from Somerset Hunt Saboteur Group. This time the hunt met at Upton Hellions near Crediton, with a field of about twenty riders plus four quad bikes. The only red coat was their field master Philip Saunders. Huntsman and whip both donned black coats and kept a low profile throughout the day. The hunt are on the back foot and running scared, having been caught red-handed killing a fox.
