Back to the South Tetcott for us today. They met in a field on the edge of Black Torrington, in an area that became part of the badger cull this year. True to form huntsman Jamie Parish spent the first hour running from everyone, including his riders and hunt support, many of whom could be overheard complaining. We’ve been hearing rumours that some of the regular followers of this hunt are not happy with the new huntsman and we’re not surprised. An hour and a half after leaving the meet a few stragglers were still seen driving aimlessly around the lanes, asking us if we’d seen the hunt and expressing their frustration.
The hunt drew coverts east and west of Black Torrington and Highampton, with hounds only speaking on occasion. By mid-afternoon scent had deteriorated across the boggy terrain and riders left in dribs and drabs. Jamie spent a long time on foot in the boggy valleys south of the meet. We watched and followed on foot but didn’t have cause to intervene as hounds failed to pick up a scent. They drew Highweek Wood one final time with sabs in tow and hounds ended up scattered over about a kilometre of woodland. As darkness drew in several hounds could be heard howling on the banks of the Torridge and members of the hunt called at both ends of the wood to try and gather them up. The hunt fizzled out but we finished on a bit of a high with some amazing cakes made for us by a kind supporter. Thank you so much!
Meanwhile, our stall at the Animal Aid’s South West Christmas Without Cruelty Festival went down extremely well and we raised a record amount from sales of merch and gift items. Thanks to everyone who came and showed their support.
